All mods generally do the same thing, however. A button allows for ‘firing’ of the atomizer - or in simple terms, applying heat to the coil, which in turn heats the E Liquid that is soaked onto the cotton. Some devices, usually box mods, also allow you to alter the amount of power that is sent to the coil - usually by adjusting the wattage or voltage.

Regulated Devices

Regulated devices are e-cigarettes which are fitted with protections against several different risks involving Lithium Ion batteries. The protections usually come as an embedded chip, which is hidden inside the chassis of the device - warnings are usually displayed on a small TFT or LCD screen, although sometimes a single light can inform the user of a fault.

A non exhaustive list of protections that a lot of regulated devices include:

Prevention of excessive discharge

Overheating protection

Short circuit avoidance

Unbalanced Battery protection

Integrated Battery Devices

Integrated Battery devices are exactly as they suggest - much like a modern smartphone, they incorporate a fixed battery directly into the device. Charging is available via a micro USB cable, eliminating the need for an external set of batteries or charger.

Mechanical Mods

Mechanical mods are the most basic form of an e-cigarette - a simple circuit with a switch that powers the atomizer for as long as its pressed. Mechanical mods harness the full power of the battery configuration of a device, minus the loss from the internal resistance of the device.

Audacious Vapes recommends that you carry out independent research before purchasing a mechanical device. These devices do not have any safety configurations built in. Misuse or improper handing of a mechanical device can cause severe injury up to and including death.

Audacious Vapes is not providing a guide for the use of mechanical devices - there are plenty of more detailed and better informed guides online. Any hints or tips written under any of the domains owned by Audacious Jooce Co Ltd are not to be taken as fact and should be subject to scrutiny and independent research. External Battery Devices

External battery devices are mods that don't come with batteries included, but have space for one, two or even up to four batteries. Generally an external battery device will take 18650 batteries, although 20700 and 21700 batteries are becoming increasingly popular. 26650 devices also make an appearance occasionally.

External battery devices can be regulated or unregulated - and while not all external devices are unregulated, all unregulated devices do use external batteries. Regulated here means that a chip inside the device will prevent anything bad happening to the device or batteries - such as overheating or excessive discharging.

It is often advised that users of external battery devices charge their batteries in a dedicated charger - a sentiment that the team at Audacious Vapes would echo. Most regulated devices will allow you to charge directly via a micro-usb cable, however, and this is mostly fine in low amounts.
